Voigt Wins Gold!

Voigt Wins Gold!

15 January, 2020

Congratulation to Mountain Green Archery Club's Meike Voigt who won a gold medal last week in the Women’s Barebow Indoor Archery Cup in Sydney.  Meike topped the qualifying with a score of 509.  Her nearest competitor Gaynor Boyd from Australia had a score of 461.

This result meant that Voigt had a bye through to the semi-finals where she met the 4th qualifier Jacqueline Green (Australia).  She took out this match 6-0.  On to the final where Voigt came up against Boyd.  This was a slightly closer affair with the final a 6-2 win to Voigt.  Congratulations!!

A total of 7 archers contested the event – 5 from Australia, 1 from Hungary – and our winning Kiwi!

In the Recurve and Compound divisions of the Sydney Indoor Cup a total of 14 New Zealanders made the trip to Sydney:

Bradley Foster, Linsay Bruce Hayward, Adam Kaluzny, Finn Matheson, Ben McLean, Caleb Russ and Sier Vermunt contested the Recurve Men; Emma Russ, Sue Sundheim and Katherine Watson in the Recurve Women; Kelsey Mills, Lachlan Mills, Riki van Tonder and Rynard van Tonder in the Compound Men.

Ben McLean had the standout performance of the tournament making the semi finals and eventually finishing fourth in the Recurve Men.  An outstanding effort after qualifying in 23rd position with a score of 535.  Finn Matheson also performed well making the last 16 to finish 9th equal after a qualifying score of 562 in 14th position.

Katherine Watson was the best of the Kiwis in the Recurve women finishing in 8th position.  Riku van Tonder has an excellent ranking round in the Compound Men with a score of 587 to place third.  He could not however replicate this form in the match play bowing out in the last 16.
