November Newsletter 2019

14 November, 2019

General Manager Introduction
My name is Phil Vyver and I started as General Manager with Archery NZ in September of this year.  Thank you for the warm welcome from those I have met or had communications with so far.  It is my intention to meet with as many members and clubs as I can in the coming months.  Please note that my role is part time so it may take some time to get around the whole country!

I will be in Wellington this Friday and Saturday for the Selection Event.  I will also be visiting the local clubs.  Please come and have a chat with me either at the Randwick Archery Club, or get in touch and we can arrange a time to meet.  For those in other parts of the country or if you can't get along this week in Wellington then please feel free to email me - [email protected] to discuss any topic on your mind.

The number of contracted staff has doubled with my appointment!  Karen Moffatt-Mcleod has done a great job as Administration Manager for the past 14 months and continues in this capacity.  Karen can be contacted on - [email protected] and also works part time.

Communication
In most meetings I have had so far it is clear that Archery NZ needs to improve its communication with members and clubs.  This monthly newsletter represents the first step in our attempt to do a much better job with our communication.  Each month we will bring you the latest information from Archery NZ, and from a wider sport context.  We would welcome contributions from around the country.  Communication is two way, so the more we can share the better!

Magazine
The next issue of the New Zealand Archer Magazine will also be its last.  Caro Geelen has done a fantastic job over the past few years with the final edition marking her 50th Magazine.  Thank you Caro!

With Caro deciding to retire from the role the Board has taken the opportunity to review the magazine's future.  With the addition of this newsletter, an intention to increase coverage through the website and Facebook and other communication channels and a reduction in subscribers the magazine is no longer required.  We will however be ensuring that the content is not lost.  A review and update of the Archery NZ website is underway to assist with this process.

For those of you that have paid the subscription for this year, we will arrange a refund.
2020 National Outdoor Championships
This key event on the Archery calendar will be held from the 6th - 9th February 2020.  The venue will be the Army Fields, Battalion Drive, Papakura, Auckland.

An invitation is extended to all archers & arbalests to come and enjoy with us the 77th Archery New Zealand National Outdoor Target & Open Championships 2020. The National Championships aim to cater for all archers regardless of ability or skill level. We would like to see as many archers as possible at the event to enjoy the fun, friendship and competition.

The Target Championships will be decided on the results of a WA 72 arrow round. Individual and Mixed Team match play events will also be held for the Recurve and Compound archers. Crossbow will shoot IR900 rounds.

Youth events are designed to accommodate the younger archers with distances appropriate to their age and skill levels and with helpers to assist with scoring. The Senior & Masters rounds will comply with the World Archery distances.

Good luck to all those involved.  It is an exciting year ahead with a number of events on the horizon.  With a Mixed Team qualifying for the 2020 Olympics the Recurve team will be hotly contested as athletes vie for the 2 available spots.
Strategic Plan
The Board has been working on an updated Strategic Plan for the sport over the past few months.  It is still a work in progress with the intention to have a full presentation and discussion at the AGM in February.  This will be followed by a period of consultation before the final plan is signed off by the Board.  The Strategic Plan will start from 1 July 2020 in line with the financial year.

At this stage the key pillars will include a focus on Participation; Champions; Leadership and Capability; Communication; and Sustainability.  Values of Respect, Inclusiveness, Sportsmanship, Celebration and Excellence will underpin the way we work and deliver the sport.  The ultimate vision is to give all New Zealanders the opportunity to participate and enjoy Archery.

More information will be released once the draft plan is completed.
Board Update
As well as working on the strategic plan the board has been working on a number of other areas.  These include:
  • Policy review - a full review of all governance and policy documents is underway to ensure they are fit for purpose and meet current standards of best practice.  This includes the Constitution, Administration and shooting rules.
  • Finance, Audit and Risk Committee - This committee has been set up to assist the board in discharging its responsibilities with respect to overseeing all aspects of financial and non-financial reporting, control and audit functions and organisational risk.
  • Nationals 2020 - The board is providing oversight for the organisation and delivery of this key event.
The Board is working hard to ensure the sport is well governed and future focused.
